Finsbury Green boosts productivity and quality with newly installed Canon varioPRINT iX3200

Completed at the end of August 2026, the installation of a Canon varioPRINT iX3200 has enabled Finsbury Green to consolidate its digital print fleet, increase output quality and reduce labor requirements. The press is now central to a more automated production environment designed to support the Australian company’s growth and long-standing commitment to responsible operations.

Building a smarter production environment

Family-owned Finsbury Green has provided print, procurement and logistics services in Australia since 1973. From its beginnings in print, the company has expanded into creative services, signage, branded merchandise, mailing, warehousing, fulfilment and national distribution. Its customers include government departments and major organizations across healthcare, education, financial services, retail and FMCG.

As Finsbury Green reviewed its digital production platform, the objective was clear: achieve lower print costs and reduce the size of the digital fleet without compromising quality. The business also wanted technology that required less specialist intervention, helping address the industry-wide challenge of finding and retaining skilled print staff.

“We wanted to reduce our digital fleet and labor requirements while lowering print costs, without sacrificing quality. The smarter we can make our equipment, the more future-ready our business becomes.” Matt Gibson, Chief Operating Officer, Finsbury Green

A collaborative installation

Installation of the varioPRINT iX3200 began in late July at Finsbury Green’s new greenfield site and was finalized at the end of August 2026.

“Despite the challenges of installing the press while building work was still under way, the process was very well coordinated. The Canon team worked closely with us and our builder, and Graeme’s excellent training gave our operators the confidence to get up and running quickly.”
Matt Gibson, Chief Operating Officer, Finsbury Green

More output with less intervention

The impact was visible almost immediately. Finsbury Green moved from seven digital printing devices to two toner devices plus the varioPRINT iX3200. Within one to two weeks, the streamlined fleet was producing the same volume as before, at higher quality and with less labor.

Operators were impressed by the press’s ease of use, low maintenance demands and limited need for fault clearing. Within a week of handover, they were routinely loading one to two hours of work at the end of the day for unattended production. This required a shift in workflow: rather than adding one or two jobs at a time, operators began preparing a deeper queue to keep the high-speed press productive throughout the day.

Consistent quality across varied applications

Finsbury Green uses the varioPRINT iX3200 for applications ranging from book-of-one print-on-demand work and forms to corporate reports and catalogues. Its different quality modes allow the company to meet a broad range of customer expectations and price points within the press’s intended substrate range.

An early test came when the team produced an ASX-listed company’s annual report requiring five Pantone colors to be matched. The operators achieved an acceptable match to the customer’s color palette, and the customer was pleased with the result. For Matt, the job demonstrated both the press’s consistency and how quickly the team could adapt to the technology.

“Overall, we have been blown away by the consistency of the varioPRINT iX3200. It gives us the quality and reliability we need across long runs, while opening up a more efficient way of working for our operators.” Matt Gibson

Sustainability and sound economics

Sustainability has shaped Finsbury Green’s business since 2002. Its environmental management framework is supported by ISO 14001:2015, ISO 9001:2015, ISO 12647 and FSC Chain of Custody certification. The company is committed to carbon-neutral operations and Zero Waste to Landfill, monitors Scope 1, 2 and relevant Scope 3 emissions, and assesses suppliers through the Finsbury Green Environmental Rating system.

While it is still too early to quantify the varioPRINT iX3200’s specific environmental impact, the investment reflects Finsbury Green’s approach of balancing responsible production with sound financial decisions. Initial labor savings are tracking as expected, and the company anticipates a strong return compared with its previous fleet.

“The varioPRINT iX3200 installation reflects our commitment to helping customers build more productive, automated and sustainable print operations. We are proud to support Finsbury Green as it strengthens its capabilities and prepares for future growth.”
Craig Nethercott, Managing Director, Canon Production Printing Australia

Ready for the next stage of growth

With the varioPRINT iX3200 established in production, Finsbury Green is watching developments across Canon’s sheetfed and continuous-feed inkjet portfolio. As the quality, cost and speed gap between traditional sheetfed offset and inkjet continues to narrow, the company sees further potential to expand its digital production capabilities.
